MGMT - Time to Pretend review

I'm doing a little music review tonight...

My brother suggested that I check out MGMT. So I did. They are an upcoming band from Brooklyn. They sound a little 80ish. I got their EP album - Time to Pretend. It's labeled as alternative. It's got an electric feel to it which I like. I was excited going into it because usually I like my brother's taste in music, so on his word I bought the album. Here's a few of the standouts...
The song Destrokk has too much going on which makes it unpleasant to listen to. The beat isn't great, so you wouldn't dance to it. There is too much going on to make it background music and it would overwhelm conversation.
Love Always Remains is better. It's got a more steady beat with a recognizable melody. Reminds me a bit of the Flaming Lips. The clapping rocks.
My favorite song on the album is Kids. It's worth adding to a playlist.
Maybe it's because I'm a bit sensitive to what I listen to (eminem excluded) and most of the songs have overtly sexual lyrics that I'm just not that stoked on.
I would recommend getting the single Kids from itunes. But if its the electronic feel that you really want and an album that you could just put on anytime without consideration of who is listening or the setting, I would go for The Postal Service - Give Up as a better album choice. Granted it's an older album and not the new thing, but it's still good.
dig it.

  1. I recommend John Butler Trio I like all of his songs and I think you would like them too.
