My inspiration.

I have never mentioned this to anyone before.
Here is the moment of vulnerability that we've all been waiting for.
Probably one of the deepest impressions made on me (when it comes to writing) was from a tv show that aired from 1989 to 1993. Considering the time that it aired I was probably around 5 or 6.

I would like to picture myself as Doogie Howser (anyone else watch that show?). Not so much the whole part about being the youngest practicing physician the United States had ever seen, but rather the part where at the end of the show he sits down at his computer and types.
Each episode he learned something new -- something that he then transposed into poignant little digital journal entries. They were full of self reflection and insight. (This is completely based off of the impression that I have carried around with me. I haven't seen an episode since it went off the air, so I really have no idea if these are romanticized kindergarten notions, and if there is any truth to them. oh well.) But I just have this clear image in my head of seeing the blue of the computer screen reflect on the actor's face and thinking, "wow, he looks like a kid but is like an adult." ha ha ha ha ha ha. oh man.

I wish that every day I had a poignant little 3 paragraph summary about the day that included learning the meaning of life or the cost of love or the value of friendship. I wish that I could write the things tv shows are made of. (ha!) But truly, watching that show is my first memory of encountering self-reflection. I was enamored by it, and I've been a narcissist ever since.

I love you.
sincerely, lisa

  1. I used to watch that show too!!!! So funny! You are like DH in so many ways, just maybe not the "post online" way. You do learn on a daily basis - I've heard you learning. You don't always have to write (but I LOVE when you do...) I love you Lisa!
